Today, The Game Awards announced that its 2016 broadcast saw a huge increase in live viewership compared to prior shows. The show featured Hideo Kojima not only receiving the industry icon award, but also showcasing Death Stranding in a new trailer. Viewership saw a 65% increase over last year – with 3.8 million live viewers instead of 2.3 from 2015 and 1.9 million live viewers in 2014. Social media performance was strong, and resulted in #thegameawards being the number one trend worldwide. The 2016 Game Awards show was newsworthy to be sure, but not all of its social media trending was positive – even if it did lead to positive metric in the grand scheme of things.
